IMPORTER EXPORTER CODE ( in short IEC ), formerly, it was a ten digit number granted by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, but now, DGFT is granting new IEC same as your PAN. DGFT grant IEC to bonafide person / organization for carrying out import/export. . DGFT organisation is an attached office of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and is headed by Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Government of India. Right from its inception till 1991, when liberalization in the economic policies of the Government took place, this organization has been essentially involved in the regulation and promotion of foreign trade through regulation. Keeping in line with liberalization and globalization and the overall objective of increasing of exports, DGFT has since been assigned the role of “facilitator”. The shift was from prohibition and control of imports/exports to promotion and facilitation of exports/imports, keeping in view the interests of the country.

Under the rule of Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act 1992, no person shall make any import or export except under an Importer-exporter Code Number granted by the Director General or the officer authorized by the Director General in this behalf, in accordance with the procedure specified in this behalf by the Director General​​.

IEC is the primary document for recognition by Government of India as an Exporter/Importer. On the basis of IEC, companies can obtain various benefits on their exports/imports from DGFT, Customs, Export Promotion Council etc.
